One of Fairbanks' favorite summer traditions is here! For more than 70 years, Golden Days has brought our community together to celebrate our history, local businesses, and the pioneering spirit that continues to shape Interior Alaska.

The celebration continues throughout the week with events including Old Tyme Games, Comedy Night, the Street Fair, Kids Korner, the Grande Parade, the Rubber Duckie Race, and more.

Ten years ago, Abi was experiencing homelessness. During that difficult season, she saw firsthand how unprepared many people are to respond in an emergency. That experience planted the seed for what would eventually become Heart & Soul CPR, a business built around one simple mission: equipping everyday people here in Fairbanks and surrounding communities with the skills and confidence to save lives.

Today, Heart & Soul CPR is an official American Heart Association Training Site and HSI Training Center, offering everything from Basic Life Support (BLS) and Wilderness First Aid to Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT), Mental Health First Aid, Child & Babysitting Safety, and Opioid Overdose training. Pet first aid and CPR classes are also coming soon.

Abi believes emergency training isn't just for healthcare professionals. "The life you save is most likely going to be a family member, coworker, or neighbor," she says. That's why Heart & Soul CPR serves everyone, from businesses needing certifications to parents, teens, and community members who simply want to be prepared.

One thing that sets Heart & Soul CPR apart is its commitment to making training accessible. In addition to professional certification courses, Abi regularly offers free community classes, including hands-only CPR and opioid overdose response training, helping remove financial barriers to these lifesaving skills.

The impact of that training is already being felt. After renewing her annual certification with Heart & Soul CPR, a local business owner encountered a passenger who collapsed while exiting an airplane. While others froze, she confidently stepped in to assess the situation and provide care until emergency responders arrived, a powerful reminder that training truly makes a difference.

When she's not teaching, Abi enjoys spending time outdoors, dancing, tending to her container garden, and working on cars. Her perfect Fairbanks weekend includes a walk through Creamer's Field, coffee from Savage Sips, dancing in the studio at the The Alaska Club, and ending the day around the fire pit with her kids.

Fairbanks is full of interesting people, opinions, and stories. Each week, we'll ask a quick question just for fun and share some responses in the next edition.

Last week we asked “When will Raising Cane’s open?”

The response was pretty split—about half of our readers think it will actually be open soon! Syd guessed it would be on September 25th—just over 2 months away. There were a few outliers that are clearly skeptical, including multiple guesses for 2030 and beyond.
