Hello Fairbanks!

One of our favorite things about living in Fairbanks is that there's always something new to discover. Whether it's a local event, a hidden resource, or a business with an interesting story, our hope is that FYI Fairbanks helps you feel a little more connected to the community each week.

Thanks for spending a few minutes with us.

Let's get started.

Community Notes

Did you know…

Every Tuesday evening (that is today!), the Southside Community Farmers Market is open from 4-6:30pm and offers more than just the opportunity to purchase fresh local food. They also host a free community meal. It's a wonderful opportunity to enjoy dinner, meet new people, and connect with your neighbors while supporting local farmers, bakers, and food makers.

The market is also committed to making fresh, locally grown food accessible to everyone. Several vendors participate in a Pay What You Can program, offering discounts of up to 50% on select items to anyone in need.

Take some time this afternoon and stop by, you’ll be glad you did.

Meet Your Neighbors

For as long as she can remember, Emily wanted to be a teacher. As a child, she'd gather her younger brother and the neighborhood kids to play school, so it's no surprise she eventually earned a degree in education and turned that dream into a career.

Emily was a teacher for over 9 years—both in-person and virtually—before launching Mrs Emily Teaches in 2024. Today, she works with local Fairbanks homeschool families and students both in-person and online. A few of her popular classes are Virtual Reading Groups based on reading levels, Mrs Emily Teaches Co-Op on Tuesdays, and one-on-one tutoring. This year Emily is planning to pilot new math classes where she teaches children math based on their grade level and they work through an entire text book during the year.

What makes Mrs Emily Teaches unique is Emily's desire to meet the needs of local families in Fairbanks and surrounding communities by offering relevant elective classes for students to enjoy. Emily wants to help students build confidence, develop healthy learning habits, and rediscover a love of learning.

Emily says one of her favorite things about Fairbanks is its supportive community, and she has loved getting to know local families through her business. Outside the classroom, you'll likely find her with an iced coffee exploring local shops or enjoying a sunny afternoon at Tanana Lakes. And despite growing up loving books, she laughs that she'd now choose her Kindle over a paper copy when reading.

Whether your family is homeschooling or looking for extra academic support, Mrs Emily Teaches is passionate about helping students in Fairbanks grow in both confidence and learning.

Last week we asked “If someone was visiting Fairbanks for the first time, what's the ONE place you'd tell them not to miss?”
Here are a few answers:
Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum! —George
Tanana Valley Farmers Market
Pipeline Viewing Point on the Steese highway north of town —Carol
Running Reindeer Ranch

That’s it for this week.
