More Than a Market

Fairbanks has no shortage of bazaars and markets, but Cozy Collective was created with a slightly different vision. The carefully curated market brings together Alaska-based makers and small businesses in an environment designed to feel welcoming, creative and, of course, cozy. Visitors can shop handmade goods, meet the people who make them, grab something delicious, take a workshop, or spend some time in one of the market's Cozy Corners.

This weekend, more than 50 Alaska-based vendors will gather at the 8 Star Events Center (1485 30th Ave, Fairbanks) with art, jewelry, pottery, baked goods, food, home goods, apparel and plenty more. The market is intentionally smaller than many of Fairbanks' larger bazaars, giving the organizers room to carefully curate the vendor mix and create an experience that encourages people to stay awhile rather than simply work their way through a shopping list.

Created by Vendors, for Vendors

Cozy Collective is organized by three Fairbanks makers and small-business owners: Brianna Reagan of Brianna Reagan Creates, Kendra Folsom of Revival Designs and Denise Serino of Smell This. Brianna creates Alaska-inspired artwork, stationery, gifts and other illustrated goods alongside her branding and design work for small businesses. Kendra gives pre-loved clothing new life through one-of-a-kind upcycled apparel. Denise creates small-batch soy candles and handcrafted home fragrance products.

The idea for Cozy Collective began as something the three friends daydreamed about, but with an already-busy bazaar scene in Fairbanks, they didn't see a need for another market. That changed when a much-loved local holiday bazaar announced it was closing. The timing gave them the opportunity to turn an idea they'd been talking about into something real.

Their years of participating in markets gave them a clear idea of what they wanted to build: the kind of event they would genuinely be excited to participate in themselves. That meant thoughtful curation, strong promotion, good organization and an emphasis on handmade goods and locally owned businesses.

That vendor perspective still influences nearly every decision they make. Vendors are juried to create a strong and varied mix of makers, and booth placement is carefully planned so businesses offering similar products aren't positioned beside one another. The team invests heavily in promoting the event, communicates closely with participating businesses and even shares the event financials with vendors afterward so they can see how their booth fees were used. Brianna, Kendra and Denise don't personally profit from vendor booth fees; the money they make during the market comes from selling their own products, just like the other makers in the room. Vendor fees instead help cover the costs of putting on and promoting Cozy Collective.

More Than Shopping

That attention to the vendor experience carries over to shoppers, too. Cozy Collective was never intended to be a place where people simply walk from booth to booth, make their purchases and leave. The team has intentionally created spaces throughout the market where visitors can slow down, participate in something or simply sit and enjoy being there.

The market's Cozy Corners turn otherwise awkward areas of the venue into some of its most memorable spaces. At the Letter Lounge, visitors can write a letter to someone they love and Cozy Collective takes care of mailing it. Last year, 79 letters left the market headed for seven Alaska cities, 23 states, and three countries. The Book Nook lets visitors drop off a used book or bring one home, while the Puzzle Parlor invites everyone to add a piece to a community puzzle.

There will also be Rylieh's Retreat, a lounge area staged by local realtor Rylieh Bodyfelt, and the Restoration Station, offering walk-in massage and energy work with Wild Light Massage out of Denali. New this year, visitors can also participate in hands-on workshops with Emmy Arts and Passionate Gem throughout the weekend.

A New Fairbanks Maker Weekend

This year's market comes with another addition: Cozy Collective is teaming up with the Fairbanks Fiber Festival to create Fairbanks Maker Weekend. The collaboration came about after the Cozy Collective team realized the two events would likely continue landing on the same weekend and decided there was an opportunity to support one another rather than view the overlap as competition.

Visitors can attend both events and collect stamps on a Maker Weekend passport, then enter their completed passport for a chance to win a collection of goods donated by makers participating in the two events. It's a fitting collaboration for a market built around supporting the people behind Fairbanks' creative small businesses.

The Cozy Collective team says that's one of the things they appreciate most about doing business here. Fairbanks may be a relatively small community, but there's an enormous amount of creativity, and local shoppers genuinely care about knowing who made something, where it came from and the story behind it.

Supporting the People Behind the Booths

For Brianna, Kendra and Denise, that's ultimately what Cozy Collective is about. The person standing behind a booth is often the same person who designed the product, made it, packaged it, photographed it, and stayed up far too late preparing for the weekend. A purchase at a local market isn't just a transaction; it's supporting the person, family and small business behind what you're taking home.

After the October market wraps up, the team will sit down together and review vendor feedback, attendance, finances and what worked—or didn't—to figure out how to make the next Cozy Collective even better. Their goal is to keep improving the experience for both vendors and shoppers without losing the thoughtful, intimate atmosphere that made Cozy Collective special in the first place.

If Cozy Collective sounds like your kind of weekend, we hope you'll make time to stop by. Shop the booths, take a workshop, spend some time in a Cozy Corner and meet some of the people behind the things you're bringing home. Every purchase supports a real person, a real family, and something they're working hard to build. And if you see Brianna, Kendra or Denise at their booths, tell them you heard about Cozy Collective from FYI Fairbanks—we'd love for them to know our readers came out to support them.

That's really at the heart of why FYI Fairbanks exists. There are so many people putting their time, creativity and energy into making Fairbanks a special place to live. When we show up for their events, shop their businesses, and tell other people about what they're doing, we're investing in the people who make our community feel like ours.

So this weekend, go see what they've created—and keep showing up for the people and places that make Fairbanks special.
