Winter Electrical Checklist for Fairbanks Homeowners
Interior Alaska winters are hard on homes—and electrical problems always seem to show up at the worst possible time. Before the temperatures drop, the team at Stew's Electric recommends taking a few simple steps to help keep your home safe and running smoothly all winter long.
Before Winter Arrives
□ Test your outdoor outlets. Make sure they're working before you actually need them.
□ Check your exterior lighting. Burned-out fixtures or faulty wiring are much easier to repair before snow and ice arrive.
□ Test your heat trace and lift station electrical. If you rely on them through the winter, don't wait until they're frozen to find out there's a problem.
□ Pay attention to warning signs. If something looks unusual, makes strange noises, or has a burning smell, don't wait—have it inspected before it becomes a bigger issue.
□ Consider the age of your electrical system. Many older Fairbanks homes were built before today's electrical demands. If your service or electrical panel hasn't been evaluated in years, it may be time for an upgrade.
Thinking About Upgrades?

If you're planning improvements before winter, Stew's Electric recommends considering:
Electrical panel upgrades
100-amp to 200-amp service upgrades
Whole-home surge protection
Generator interlock kits
Whole-home backup generators
These upgrades can improve safety, increase capacity for today's appliances, and provide added peace of mind during Interior Alaska's long winters.
Winter Is a Great Time for Indoor Projects

Many homeowners assume electrical work has to wait until summer, but that's not the case.
Winter is an excellent time to schedule:
Electrical panel replacements and upgrades
Troubleshooting electrical issues
Lighting repairs and upgrades
Service repairs and upgrades
And yes—Stew's Electric continues to perform many outdoor electrical projects throughout the winter as well.
💡Stew's Tip
If every Fairbanks homeowner could do just one thing before winter arrives, the team at Stew’s Electric recommends scheduling an Electrical Wellness Inspection.
The health of your home is important and a proactive inspection can identify small problems before they turn into emergency repairs during the coldest months of the year.
